Once upon a time, in a kingdom far far away lived a prince and his servant boy, they were very good friends. On the prince's 18th birthday the servant boy wanted to make magical lanterns for the prince as a birthday gift. So he went to the forbidden forest to find the magical tree to make the papers as a material for the lantern. The servant boy soon got lost in the forest and was attacked by a kelpie and drowned in the forest lake.

After the birthday party the prince found out that the servant boy was missing and never came back to the castle, so he went looking for him. At the forrest he encountered the kelpie who killed the servant boy and knew what had happened to the poor boy. Angered and saddened he killed the kelpie with the pair of scissors that the servant boy left behind.

The prince was frustrated and had guilt in his heart because he blamed himself for his friend's death. feeling miserable he began to wonder aimlessly in the forest and later he died of starvation.

After a few years, the villagers who lived near the forest would sometimes see a boy sitting near the magical tree making lanterns and hang it on the tree. the boy would hum to himself and said that hopefully one day these lanterns would be able to be a guide to his friend to lead him back to the prince.
